December Newsletter 2022

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

It’s that time of year again when family and friends gather to celebrate the Christmas season.

My wish for you all is a healthy, happy Christmas with those you hold dear, and a Happy New Year.

I would like to welcome the new Executive and committee members to the team.

It has been my pleasure to represent you all as past President and remember, be safe and be kind to each other. All the best.

Denise

OHS Report

Our OHS Umbrella committee currently has four members on the team, Janice Cantwell, Sharon Bona, Shelley Axworthy, Debbie Long and Myself, Glenn MacPhee (Chair). Thanks goes out to Nelson Scott for holding a position on this committee this past year. The committee meets with management and NSTU monthly to discuss the safety reports submitted by the Onsite OHS committees.
We try to watch for any occurring issues or issues that have not been resolved over the months.

Well it seems like winter has finally arrived here in Cape Breton.

Our committee would like to remind all members that winter weather poses some threats to our safety and well being. Please take extra time on bad weather days to arrive safely to work and return home. Dress accordingly with the weather conditions and be prepared for changes in our weather.

With the snow and ice around our work sites, we remind those working outside, the board has ice cleats available to staff to assist in walking in these frosty icy weather conditions.

Lately we have been seeing an increase in the reporting of violence towards our members in our work locations. I encourage all members to keep reporting these cases and near misses as they occur to assist in reinforcing our efforts to ensure our employer provides a safe working environment for us.

Myself and the committee members would like to wish all CUPE members a Happy and Safe New Years.

In Solidary
Glenn MacPhee 1St V.P. & OHS Umbrella Committee

Chair Grievance Report & 2nd Vice President Report

There is only one outstanding grievance on our books. I would like to thank the membership for their support while I was filling in for 2nd Vice President vacant position. Congrats to the newly elected 2nd Vice President Ray Graham. We have to work as a whole, in order to succeed as a Union. As members, we have to support our Executive in order to police our contract. If you feel that our contract has been broken, please contact the Executive because if the Executive does not know, they cannot work on your behave.
When applying for positions with the Centre for Education and they are asking for someone from the Equity Group, you must Self Identify in your cover letter. Do not assume that our Employer knows you are from the Equity Group but State it in your cover letter.
In closing, I want to wish my Brothers and Sisters Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Good Health in the coming year.
In Solidarity,
Moe Farrell
